YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
- What is Gift Aid?
- Gift Aid was introduced by the Government in April 2000 as part of the “Get Britain Giving Campaign”. It replaced the more complex and legalistic Covenanted Giving to Charities.
- Why did the Government introduce Gift Aid?
- The Government realised that the State could not afford to provide as many welfare services as it had previously. The rationale behind Gift Aid is to encourage the public to support Charities, by allowing donations made by taxpayers to be given in a tax efficient manner, thus helping to reduce the burden on the State.
- Is Gift Aid complex and does it involve me in filing out lots of forms?
- The Government has made Gif Aid giving as simple as possible - honestly. As long as you have paid sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains tax to cover the amount the charity will reclaim on your donation and you tell the charity your name address - that’s all you have to do. The charity will liaise with the Inland Revenue to reclaim an amount on your donation equal to basic rate tax; you don’t have to do anything? If you are a higher rate tax payer you can claim addition relief via your tax return
- How much does the Government give the Charity?
- The Government gives an amount equal to the amount of basic rate tax paid on your donation. In practical terms this means that for each £1.00 you give the Government will add another 28 pence. So for every £1.00 you give via Gift Aid, the Charity receives £1.28 at no cost to you.
- This sounds too good to be true. “I give a charity £1.00 and the Government adds another 28 pence – where’s the catch”
- I know it’s hard to believe but there is no catch. Gift Aid is a simple and tax efficient way to swell your giving to Charities without having to dig deeper into your pocket and complete complex forms. How else can you turn £1.00 into £1.28 with no risk and the Chancellor’s blessing?
- Can you explain to me about ????
