Freemasons set to turn the sky Orange over Chingford and Loughton

The summer sky over Chingford and the rest of East Essex is set to turn Orange on June 5th as thousands of balloons are released in what is being hailed as the largest race of its kind ever held in the County.

It is all part of a massive fund raising initiative by freemasons in Loughton, Chingford and Ilford to buy a new “D” Class Lifeboat which will be stationed later this year at Southend.

The initiative, dubbed OrangeAid, after the vivid colours worn by R.N.L.I. rescuers is already attracting huge interest, not only from Freemasons but from all sections of the local community, who will be taking part in a series of fun events over the weekend of June 4th and 5th to help raise the £25,000 needed.

The highlight of the weekend will be the balloon race from Chingford Masonic Hall in Forest Approach, Station Road. The Essex Provincial Grand Master Sir Neil Thorne will release the thousands of balloons, all coloured orange at around 3pm on the Sunday.

Prior to that Chingford Centre Freemasons will be linking up with their colleagues from Loughton and Ilford. Together they have organised a sponsored stroll involving hundreds of masons, their friends and families, between the two centres taking in picturesque Epping Forest.

Other fun events include a quiz night, crazy golf, roll a penny and much more to help make the weekend enjoyable and memorable. For those that want to know more about Freemasonry, the Chingford centre will be open and masons present to answer as many questions as they can.

Organisers Chris Hicks from Loughton and Tony Curtis at Chingford claim it will be the largest public Masonic event of its kind ever held in the area – and to their knowledge – the largest ever balloon race. There are still tickets for those that want to take part in the race and can be obtained by contacting Tony Curtis on 01708 510406 or tony.curtis@orangeaid.info or Chris Hicks on 01277 260532 chris.hicks@orangeaid.info – tickets are priced at £3 each.

OrangeAid Challenge
Only the tough need apply

Freemasons in Harlow are looking for the strongest men and women in Essex to take part in a gruelling 75 metre challenge as part of a Countywide initiative to raise £25,000 to buy a new “D” Class inflatable lifeboat.

Called the OrangeAid Challenge, after the vivid clothing worn by R.N.L.I. rescuers, those who want to take part must be fit and able enough to tow an eight tonne bus, say local organisers Lee and Trevor Barnwell.

Only the tough need apply and ideally they should be in teams of eight people who will tow the bus, donated free of charge by Arriva, over two lengths of a 75 metre course in Westgate Square, Harlow, on Saturday June 4th – the fastest average speed wins.

Two Harlow Freemasons Lodges have already put up teams for the OrangeAid Challenge, but are looking for other groups or individuals who want to take them on. It is hoped that teams will be sponsored to help raise the money for the lifeboat, which will be based at nearby Southend.

“ The event is part of a campaign of fun events across Essex throughout the weekend of June 4th,” said Trevor Barnwell. “ We hope to raise enough money between us to buy a new lifeboat but it also gives us the opportunity to involve Freemasonry with the community which is happening more and more across the County.”

“ The more teams willing to take part, the bigger the event and I am hoping that there will be plenty of fit and able men and women who can help us make this a day to remember.”

There will be a distinctive OrangeAid Challenge Cup for the winners and those who would like to take part should first contact Leigh Barnwell on 07958 465792 if they think they are tough enough.

Sponsored Walk turns into
Cheaters Charter

It has been billed as a sponsored walk, but for hundreds of Freemasons in Southend and Rochford it could turn into a “ Cheaters Charter” if local locksmith and vintage car enthusiast Mike Keen gets his way.

Instead of completing an eight mile course to raise money to buy a new lifeboat it seems that dozens are preparing to take the easy option with a little help from Mike and two Rolls Royce’s.

It is all part of OrangeAid, a scheme launched by Essex Freemasons and named after the vivid clothing worn by RNLI rescuers, to raise £25,000 to buy a new inshore lifeboat, which will be permanently stationed at Southend.

“ The sponsored walk will take place between the Masonic centre in Woodgrange Drive, Southend and the one at South Street, Rochford over the weekend of June 4th,” said Mike, who lives in Trinity Road, Southend.

“ We have to recognise that some of our walkers are not as young as they used to be or perhaps feel they would like to complete the course in a bit of style. If that’s the case they will have to make a charitable donation and they can finish the course without the risk of a single blister.”

One Rolls Royce will be based at Southend and the other at Rochford into what amounts to a Cheaters Charter for those who feel the eight-mile course can be completed with the minimum of effort. The cars are part of a fleet of five vintage vehicles, owned by Mike, who is also a local freemason.

With a little help from the cars as well as those who complete the course the hard way it is hoped that Southend and Rochford Freemasons will raise nearly £5,000 towards the £25,000 total.
